RMB Basics: Denominations, Exchange & Counterfeit Tips
Denominations
The 5th series RMB (2019 edition): bills in ¥100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 1; coins in ¥1, ¥0.5, ¥0.1. The ¥100 note features Mao Zedong on the front and the Great Hall of the People on the back. ¥20 bills are less common; some vending machines don't accept them.
Exchange Tips
Best rates: Bank of China or ICBC counters — passport required. Airport rates are 1–2% worse than banks but available 24/7. Hotel exchange has the worst rates — emergency only. ATM withdrawals offer near-bank rates; fees ¥20–30/transaction, daily limit ¥2,500.
Spotting Counterfeits
¥100 security features: hold to light to see watermark portrait and "100"; tilt the note to see the color-shifting ink numeral change (gold → green); feel the raised intaglio print on the left side of the front. Check these three points when receiving ¥100 bills — counterfeits mainly circulate at night markets and small stalls.
