June Lotus Viewing Spots Across China
Lotus holds a special place in Chinese culture — "rising from mud unstained," growing from dirty water yet remaining clean. Zhou Dunyi's "On the Love of Lotus" made it a symbol of moral purity, still a mandatory-memorization text in Chinese middle schools.
June through August, lotus blooms everywhere in China, but some places offer distinctly different experiences.

"Curved Courtyard and Lotus Breezes" — one of West Lake's Ten Scenes, specifically a lotus showcase. Located in West Lake's northwest corner, not large but many varieties — red, white, double-petal, twin-stem lotus. Peak bloom: mid-June to July; best visited early morning (lotus opens in morning, closes afternoon), photography best when morning mist hasn't cleared. Free; walk along the northern Su Causeway to reach it.
"Lotus on four sides, willows on three; half the city is mountains, half is lake" — this poem describes Daming Lake. Daming Lake's lotus covers a third of the lake surface; midsummer from the lake pavilion, nothing but lotus leaves and flowers fill your vision. Jinan is the "Spring City" — Daming Lake is fed by underground springs, making it exceptionally clear. Lotus and spring water: a combination unique to Jinan. Daming Lake is free.
Slender West Lake's lotus is "slender" — narrow, elongated waterways with lotus along both banks, not spread across vast areas but winding and dotting between pavilions and towers. Boating through lotus clusters, leaves reaching from both sides almost touchable, flowers at arm's length. ¥100 (includes boat); enter from the south gate, walk through to Twenty-Four Bridges.

"Honghu waters wave on wave, Honghu's shores are my homeland" — this old revolutionary song made Honghu famous. Honghu has China's largest wild lotus area, over 100,000 mu; July–August it's an ocean of lotus. Boat into the lotus marshes (~¥60), surrounded by lotus leaves taller than people, only sky visible above. Picking lotus pods, digging lotus roots, drinking lotus seed soup — Honghu people transformed lotus from scenery into daily life.
Weishan Lake (Shandong) — Another filming location for "Railway Guerrillas." Also a lotus heavyweight, but the specialty is "Lotus Banquet" — a full table of dishes from lotus flowers, leaves, seeds, and roots: steamed fish in lotus leaf, stuffed lotus root, lotus seed soup, lotus pastry. See the lotus, eat the lotus — a complete experience loop.
