Complete Guide to Chinese Traditional Festivals
Most Chinese traditional festivals follow the lunar calendar, each with unique foods, rituals, and legends.
Major Festivals at a Glance
Qingming / Tomb-Sweeping Day (early April) — a day for honoring ancestors. Families visit graves to clean, leave flowers and food, and in some regions burn paper offerings. Also a popular time for spring outings and kite flying.
Dragon Boat Festival (5th day, 5th lunar month) — commemorating poet Qu Yuan. Eat zongzi (sticky rice in bamboo leaves) and watch dragon boat races. Southern zongzi are savory (meat, egg yolk), northern ones sweet (dates, red bean) — an annual debate in China.

Qixi / Double Seventh (7th day, 7th lunar month) — when the Cowherd and Weaving Girl reunite on a magpie bridge once a year. Now called "Chinese Valentine's Day." Young people go on dates and exchange gifts.
Mid-Autumn Festival (15th, 8th lunar month) — moon gazing, eating mooncakes, family reunion. Mooncake flavors range from traditional lotus seed paste with egg yolk to modern ice cream and custard varieties. Those away from home gaze at the same moon, missing their families.
Double Ninth (9th, 9th lunar month) — climbing heights, admiring chrysanthemums, drinking chrysanthemum wine. Also "Seniors' Day," when children show respect to elders.
Ethnic Minority Festivals
Water Splashing Festival (April) — Dai New Year in Xishuangbanna and Dehong. The more water thrown at you, the luckier you are.
Naadam (July-August) — traditional Mongolian festival featuring horse racing, wrestling, and archery. Held on Inner Mongolian grasslands — you can stay in yurts.
Traditional festivals are usually public holidays (1 day each for Qingming, Dragon Boat, Mid-Autumn), and popular sites get very crowded — buy tickets in advance.
